Exactly why is New York City called “The Big Apple”?

There's been many rumors why NYC is called “The Big Apple” for a long period, but research within the last 2 decades, primarily by amateur etymologist Barry Popik and Gerald Cohen of Missouri University of Science and Technology, has provided a relatively clear picture from the term’s history.

Ny was popularized as a mention of the Nyc by John J. Fitz Gerald in several Ny Morning Telegraph articles within the 1920s in mention of the The big apple horse-racing.

It’s asserted the winning horse got an extra ny following the race… so that all the horses were going to obtain the The big apple.

Funny, isn’t it?!
